Update and Tryout Specifics for Prospective 2014 Stone Bridge High School Varsity Golfers

Tryouts will be held on August 4, 5 and 6, 2014, at the following times and locations:

August 4:   Goose Creek Golf Course:   18  holes will be played beginning at 9:30 am.   Goose Creek only has a putting green, no range area, so if you need to warm up prior to playing, please do so at another course (West Park in Leesburg has a driving range) before arriving at Goose Creek.  Allow 4.5 to 5 hours for the round, you will be carrying your golf clubs so be prepared (money for drinks/snacks. ) Tryouts should be completed by 3 pm.

August 5 and 6:   Belmont Country Club.    Allow time to check through the guard gate to arrive at the course by 2 pm.   We will meet at the putting green.  There will be a warm up and skills assessment for one hour prior to tee times for 9 holes of play beginning at 3 pm on both days of tryouts at Belmont.  Tryouts should be completed by 6 pm on both of these days.

Stone Bridge High School Varsity Golf Team – 2014

  1. Competition:  It is encouraged that all rising 9th graders who wish to tryout for the SBHS Golf Team establish a USGA Handicap, play in the Loudoun Junior Golf League and/or participate in MAPGA junior tournaments throughout the spring/summer,
  2. Golf Instruction:   If you need technical assistance/instruction during the spring/summer, there are many camps and golf instructors throughout the County, such as:  1757 Golf Academy, Elite Performance Golf Academy, Raspberry Falls Academy, River Creek Golf Course, Golf Tec (at Golfsmith).  Each of these facilities/instructors can assist with golf improvement/refinement issues.
  3. Tryouts:   Tryouts will be a minimum of three days most likely August 4, 5 and 6, 2014.  Coach Mjoness will post details to the SBHS Sports website by early July, if not sooner, as to details of tryouts (locations, times, etc.)  Additional important information regarding tryouts:

In order to tryout, the following forms must be completed and turned in by August 1st

  • Completed VHSL Physical
  • Emergency Care Card
  • Loudoun County Training Rules and Regulations
  • Warning & Assumption of Risk for Participation
  • Concussion Guidelines

Please fully complete these forms with all required signatures and turn them in to the SBHS Office (to the attention of Mr. Hembach) by August 1, 2014.  All of these forms are available on www.stonebridgesports.org under the “Athletic Forms” tab at the top of the Home page.

Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) requires every athlete to have a minimum of 3 days of tryouts.  Therefore, a coach has the option of making all of the final cuts after the Wednesday round, and the selected team can begin practicing the next day.  Only in circumstances where a coach needs to see more of a player in order to make a final decision will tryouts extend through Thursday August 7.  If you don’t have all 5 forms completely filled out and turned in to SBHS by the first tryout day, you will NOT be able to participate until they are submitted (each missed tryout day because of late paperwork counts towards your three required tryout days).

Selection Criteria:

The following are a few of the skills/abilities that will be assessed during tryouts and team selection process:   Overall Golf Swing (mechanics, balance, consistency), Driving Power/Accuracy, Long and Short Iron Play, Pitching/Chipping, Putting, Sand Shots, Hitting from Difficult Lies, Mental Focus/Concentration, Decision-Making/Course Management, Knowledge of Golf Rules and Etiquette and Individual Scores on tryout days.

4)Golf Team Size:   The Golf Team will likely be limited in size and consist of those players:  a) who demonstrate the best golfing ability, and b) have the potential to contribute to the team in competition in 2014.

5)Golfer Fitness and the Offseason:  Work on your golf fitness during the spring/summer.  See the golf fitness handout provided.
